We started Need To Know because we believe that there should be a better way of finding trusted recommendations than those currently on offer. We just had one too many bad experiences.
What are fake reviews?
Fake reviews come in many guises. They include everything from user reviews that have been paid for to the artful manipulation of search algorithms to craftily designed sponsored content. Check out these stories from Vice, The Guardian, The Independent and the BBC for more specific examples.
Why should we trust you?
We’ve been in the travel writing and publishing business for a long time. Between us, we have over 500 years’ experience in writing, editing, commissioning and publishing properly researched, well-written and trustworthy recommendations. We visit everywhere we write about in person.
Who are the writers?
Most of our writers are friends and former colleagues who are professional travel writers.
Why do you charge a membership fee?
We think that a membership fee is the fairest way to be able to provide genuine recommendations to those who value expert opinion and are willing to pay for it. We don't run adverts, we don't have sponsors and we don't sell tickets or our members’ data. The membership fee is our only income stream.
Why is the membership fee so low?
The membership fee is low because it can be. We are a social enterprise that creates jobs, pays fairly and donates to charities that we care about. We don't have demanding shareholders, we don't have swish offices and we don't have ridiculous expenses. We believe the price is fair and we want members to be with us for the long term.
How do you choose the places?
Our writers only include the places they unequivocally recommend from their extensive travels abroad and at home.
Which locations do you cover?
From the smallest village to the largest cities, we keep our eyes open wherever in the world we happen to be.
Why do you consider yourselves socially responsible?
We are a cooperative organisation that pays writers fairly and gives 10% of all members’ fees to charities that set out to preserve the environment.
What made you choose those particular charities?
The Need To Know writers feel lucky to have seen all sorts of different cultures and landscapes. We want other people to have the chance to experience them too. We feel strongly that we need to look after our amazing planet so all our chosen charities are involved with environmental protection.
