GenesisFunkilicious vegan food with a generous helping of pink neon
Restaurants across the world are looking to either cash in on or make the most of the opportunities provided by the rise in veganism. Genesis is a restaurant that lies firmly in the latter camp. There’s clearly plenty of money behind the venture, with a lot of it on display in a space and design that have made it an Instagrammers’ dream. Pastel Art Deco and flamingo pinks dominate a bright interior made brighter by neon lighting, funky furnishings and copper fixtures and fittings (check out the bathrooms!), but it’s the food that really shines.
Bringing together an eclectic and inventive menu imaginatively drawn from global street food takes some balls, but these guys pull it off with panache; tasty seitan Korean BBQ wings, crispy battered jackfruit ‘duck’ salad with hoisin sauce, Malaysian char kway teow and Middle Eastern Salad are just some of the tasty-sounding dishes on offer, and they’re bursting with colour, flavour and in-your-face goodness. They’re also hearty, filling and a welcome antidote to those exquisite small plates that leave you raiding the fridge as soon as you get home. With a wealth of smoothies, mocktails, kombucha and juices to wash it all down, this is a great addition to London’s vegan food scene, and a rare one in meat-tastic Shoreditch.
