Surfers Paradise is well catered for when it comes to big chains and apartment hotels but decent value, snappily-designed, cool digs were virtually non existent until The Island opened. A refurbed ’80s tower that used to be popular with ‘schoolies’ (partying school leavers), it has a rooftop cocktail bar, a cavernous, breezy restaurant, a pool, and 100 or so decently sized, aesthetically pleasing rooms: think open wardrobes and black ironwork offset by light timber cladding. It’s a block from the beach and with doubles from £100/night, it won’t break the bank.
