Most people head to California for sun, surf, and dramatic scenery. So it probably tells you all you need to know about this stunning little hotel that once you've been ushered into your cosy bedroom, all you want to do is lock the door and tell the world to go away. It's a beautifully maintained log cabin built on the site of an 18th-century grist mill. Each of the thirteen rooms has a firm comfortable bed with pillows like marshmallows, views onto the shaded garden complete with waterwheel, and tastefully subtle decor. Beyond all this, the main draw is the excellent breakfast, especially when presided over by the chef Sam, the Mozart of egg breakfasts. Blueberry pancakes almost as fluffy as the pillows in the bedrooms, baked egg and parmesan confections – you never know what awaits when you wake up, but it will always be a treat.
