Occupying the 1901 premises of the Holland America Line shipping company, the Hotel New York is packed with historic details. Each of the 72 handsomely decorated rooms and suites have real character and the waterside setting is a treat. There’s a moodily lit speakeasy-style cocktail bar in the basement, and a light-filled, high-ceilinged café-restaurant on the ground floor. Seafood is a speciality – check out the oyster bar – though the menu also encompasses coffee and cake, and vegetarian dishes. Arrive by water taxi for an extra thrill.
