Built 100 years ago as immigrant housing for workers at the nearby Kohler faucet factory, the Tudor-style American Club has become one of the most luxurious resorts in the Midwest. The factory still stands (and now produces high-end kitchen and bath fixtures), and the resort grounds include the five-star Kohler Waters Spa, two championship golf courses, five restaurants and three additional lodging options. Just a two-hour drive north of Chicago, it's a favorite weekend escape for those willing to splurge. The spa alone is worth the drive: Spend the day lounging in plush robes on chaise longues, swim in the pool capped with a thundering waterfall, fall asleep in front of the fireplace after a stint in the top floor's solarium whirlpool… and oh, yeah, get a massage, body treatment or facial. The Immigrant Restaurant is a top-notch dining experience, but the resort's far less pricey Horse & Plow (pub food and craft beer) and Wisconsin Room (excellent Sunday brunch buffet) are just as good.
