With a mission statement to be the ‘world’s best destination for readers’, Powell’s City of Books is all about the reader experience, giving it an almost magnetic pull whenever you’re in the area. This sprawling rabbit warren of a shop, originally an old car dealership which has been expanded every which way since the '70s, invites browsers and those on all budgets with its wide range of used books that sit alongside new copies on every shelf. This is not a slick designer space, but a lived-in series of interconnecting rooms and levels, much like an old and well-loved library. The fact that it’s a family run business, based on a passion for books and a complete respect for authors, adds to the community hub atmosphere that’s made complete with hundreds of author readings and signings each year, story time for kids and a coffee shop tucked in one corner. All in all Powell’s is a comforting home-from-home for readers, part of Portland’s DNA (with several neighbourhood branches), and this flagship store is open 365 days of the year, should you need a daily dose.
