Although it’s no secret that Japan is a photophile’s haven, the beauty of camera shopping in Tokyo is uncovering the city’s hidden photo shops. Hidden in the heart of underground Shinjuku is where you’ll find Chuko Camera Box (also known as Used Camera Box), a second-hand camera shop that’s crammed full of old cameras, equipment, and junk pieces. The men behind the counter are brimming with photographic knowledge and are refreshingly helpful and honest; if something isn’t worth your money and time, they’ll be sure to let you know. Do be warned, the place is literally the size of a shoebox-style Tokyo apartment, so leave your backpack at the door.
