Draw a triangle connecting Bristol, Bath and Wells, and Bookbarn International lies right at the centre. It’s actually less a barn, more a hangar – but it’s a welcoming place, from the counter just within to the café. The ‘new arrivals’ shelves have as many books on them as some second-hand bookshops have in their entirety. Past these is where Bookbarn really begins. A long walkway has a seemingly endless wall of fiction on one side, while on the other is row after row of non-fiction divided into subject areas. If you’ve ever fancied collecting the Penguin Modern Poets series, this would be a good place to start; they had eight of the 27 volumes on a recent visit. At the end of one aisle a vivid splash of turquoise heralds a huge selection of Pelicans. The most amazing thing about Bookbarn International? All the books are £1.
