Local nickname ‘Melrose & Mortgage’ doesn’t do justice to the unerring discernment that underpins this chic deli-cafe. Shelves are lined with posh porridge oats, fashionable teas, Spanish beans and gourmet bars from the UK’s best boutique chocolatiers. The chiller cabinet is plump with unhomogenised Jersey milk, River Cottage yogurts, farmhouse cheese and handmade pâté. But its Melrose & Morgan’s own-made menu that’s the real draw – from sausage rolls and beef and stout pies to exquisite lemon tarts and Seville orange marmalade. On the counter, roast salmon and lemon-oregano chicken sit ready to accompany several salads, whether for a supper party chez NW3 or a picnic on the Heath. Enjoy coffee/cake/soup in the mezzanine lounge overlooking the shop floor, or at the red alfresco benches lining the pedestrianised street. There's a branch in Primrose Hill; you can buy some items online too – try the masterful Simnel cake for a Mothering Sunday to remember.
