Nobody visits a foreign city to buy raw meat, but if they did, Montreal would be up there in the top three cities to see before you die. The place has amazing butcher shops, and Grinder, which specialises in aged meat, is one of the most amazing. It’s included here for two reasons: they have three restaurants, two also in Griffintown, one on the Plateau, all three well worth a tourist’s time, unless that tourist happens to be vegetarian; and the shop itself turns raw meat into art. Hunks of beef are showcased behind glass like diamonds, and the butcher’s block is a beautiful wooden counter, 24 feet long. Even the lighting is fabulous. So, if you’re in self-catering accommodation, shop here; if you’re not, eat next door. But either way, come for a look. It really is beautiful.
