There’s real joy to be had in watching the seasons change in the colourful display of fruit and veg at Puntarelle & Co. The oranges and yellows of Sicilian citrus brighten up the winter months, and are superseded by the vibrant green of spring’s asparagus, wild garlic leaves and fuzzy broad beans. In summer, tomatoes jostle for space with juicy stone fruits, then give way to autumn’s earthy wild mushrooms, squashes and pumpkins. Elena Deminska, who runs Puntarelle & Co, is always at hand to point customers in the direction of the ideal vegetable for whatever they happen to be cooking. And, in case you were wondering, puntarelle is an Italian chicory, a winter vegetable that makes a great salad when sliced thinly and served with a dressing made from anchovies, lemon juice, garlic and olive oil. Open Saturdays 7am-2pm.
