This is so much more than a cheese shop – and that’s not just a reference to the myriad gourmet groceries that line the walls, or the hotch-potch of café tables spread over the premises next door. Like all world-class fromageries, the Fine Cheese Co is an affineur, meaning they hand-select cheeses from farms and dairies and nurture them to perfection on their own premises. They also create their own cheese products – pairing, say, creamy soft Brillat-Savarin with carefully selected dehydrated fruit to make a ‘strawberry cheesecake’, and developing their own ranges of crackers and preserves to match different types of cheese. The obsession with quality is reflected, as you’d hope, in the café menu, which treats the best of Britain and continental Europe simply. Croque monsieurs and other variations of the cheese toastie take centre stage but there’s also granola, fried breakfasts, charcuterie, salads and soups. The window display hosts a rich range of cakes to have with Jing teas or coffee from Le Piantagioni del Caffè.
