Housed in the former Victorian railway station of Alnwick (closed in 1968 as part of the Beeching cuts), Barter Books is one of the best and largest second-hand bookshops in Britain. Over 350,000 used books, with subjects ranging from art and architecture to romance and Westerns, are carefully arranged throughout the grand building, along with rare and antiquarian books, maps, DVDs and some vinyl. Grab a book and settle down in front of the log fire, with your dog (actively welcomed) or sprog (there’s also a children’s room), or head to the Station Buffet – also with a cosy fire – for excellent homemade food, including an unmissable Selkirk Bannock cake, and Northumbrian rarebit. Oh, and there’s a wonderful model railway that travels around the top of the shelves in the central room.
