Fischer'sA Viennese café in... London
You don't have to go to Vienna to find the perfect art deco café for a Citizen Kane-style secret meeting. Or, well, just a hot chocolate or decent Wiener Schnitzel.
Tucked away on Marylebone High Street lies the discreet-looking (from the outside) Fischer's – a café, restaurant and bar – that feels as alien to London as a fish and chip takeaway in Austria's capital.
On the inside Fischer's, far from looking discreet, is all style and charm, green-leather upholstered booths edge the rectangular space with imposing wood tables dotting the interior, mahogany panelled and mirrored walls disrupted by grand looking portraits and paintings of Austrian landscapes, smartly dressed men and women. It's rather beautiful and with aproned waiter service and a fine menu be it breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner – a dark and cosy delight for any time of day or night.
The food is classic Viennese, and if you've ever been to the city you'll know that means all the cured fish, brötchen, sausages, strudels and Sacher Tortes you can stuff down you. Portions are large, prices decent and the coffees, chocolates and teas are a speciality – forget buying overpriced sludge in your average high street caff.
A nice touch is that the majority of the Austrian, German, French Alsatian and Hungarian wines on offer come by the glass, meaning you can try a few on the inevitable romantic encounter you'll plan for a future night once you've been the first time.
Just don't eat too much!
