EggslutThe ultimate (non) breakfast sandwich
Eggs are so much more than you thought they were. Well, so say the Californians behind Eggslut, the first branch of the American egg-obsessed restaurant in London on the Portobello Road. And frankly so say I.
Their signature dish, named naturally ‘the Slut,’ consists of a coddled egg on top of a smooth potato purée, poached in a glass jar, topped with grey salt and chives, served with slices of baguette. It’s melt in your mouth good. But the food here is not just for breakfast. Eggslut’s aim is to make eggs an all-day staple, and on the strength of our visit we reckon they might just succeed. These are gourmet eggs but served up as comfort food, and naturally all sourced from cage-free farms.
The service is super friendly, the place itself bright and welcoming and the eggs super good. Alongside the Slut there’s a mouth-watering cheeseburger made up of ground Angus beef, over medium egg, caramelized onions, bread and butter pickles, cheddar cheese, and dijonnaise in a warm brioche bun; as well as a fine sandwich named the Fairfax consisting of soft scrambled eggs and chives, cheddar cheese, caramelized onions and sriracha mayo. And if you don’t want bread you can have salad instead.
Eggs have never tasted so good. Who'd have thought?!
