Just the way the French waiters say ‘terroir’ will have you salivating over the wine list here, rolling it around their mouths with the pleasure of sharing their favourite finds. Turns out the waiters are actually the owners so they really do know the contents of their bottles and dishes inside out. Authentique opened in 2018 as an epicerie and bar – the shelves are full of specialities and treats – but it’s also a restaurant Thursday to Sunday serving lunch and dinner. A clear design division and clever subdued evening lighting is enough to make you forget you're essentially sitting in a shop; the atmosphere is relaxed whether you're on stools around the bar or at the generously spaced out tables down one side of the airy space. The menu has a few fixed items such as salami or cheese platters (excellent) and a handful of cooked small plates for sharing; these vary as Authentique invites guest chefs to do a season. It's rare these days to find a restaurant where you can have a proper conversation, but it's a joy when you do.
