With its soft lighting and real fire, the Bull & Last – a well-presented, classically refurbished pub – offers very welcome respite from a cold winter’s night. In summer, pavement tables just by the lower slopes of Hampstead Heath are popular. Add the fact that they serve distinctively and consistently good food and it's no surprise this is nearby resident Giles Coren's favourite local. Gin is a good place to start and we opted for St George Terroir from California which was served with a bayleaf twist. Our knowledgeable server helped us narrow down the choices, and over two courses we tried a superb chestnut and wild mushroom handmade rigatoni pasta and a rabbit and ham hock pie, followed by a memorable fried banana & chocolate crêpe roll and homemade Ferrero Rocher ice cream. Tables fill up rapidly, so it’s worth booking ahead.
