Even in the chocolate-box surroundings of Haddington’s historic town square – shops and cafés painted autumnal yellow and burnt umber – the turreted, bright-blue-and-white frontage of Falko’s Restaurant and Café stands out. Nip inside and it’s even better: homemade ice cream, freshly baked breads, too many cakes to choose from and some savoury Swabian specialities from the German master baker. Grilled Swiss toast and open smoked salmon sandwiches are a solid lunchtime shout, but save room for dessert – that warm, warming apple strudel’s not gonna eat itself.
