A classy joint this, taking prime position on one of Eixample’s wide boulevards. Glass doors give way to a mirrored room with bar stools facing expansive displays of food. The bigger, tabled room has a sense of mid-century modern, a sort of posh works canteen where hard surfaces amplify the conversation and relentless service. The tapas may come up thick and fast but each is a star turn – skewered octopus, razor clams, deep-fried whitebait and fat balls of cuttlefish. Or a slice of fillet with a slab of foie gras. Alongside a morning coffee, try a montadito, a tiny fresh-bake baguette stuffed with cheese or ham. Catalana certainly gets all the raves but it comes with a caveat. The place gets mobbed. Depending on the time, you could be waiting an age for a table but pour another glass, go with the flow, and you’ll be richly rewarded.
