Avoid the endless chain bars and restaurants in Covent Garden and book a table (essential) at this cosy, laid-back, candlelit bar in the heart of 'theatreland'. You’ll be served high quality Spanish wine and food (charcuterie and cheese are favourites). Excellent specials include salty Padrón peppers, succulent crispy ‘Calamares a la Romana’ with Alegria pepper and toasted coriander and the 3- or 5-Spanish cheese selections that include a poky Picos de Valdeón Azul, creamy sheep’s La Serena and cow’s Tetilla (small breast). And don’t miss the daily-changing croquetas – the spinach in deliciously peppery bechamel is particularly good. Service is friendly and solicitous and, for food this good (and portion sizes this decent), prices are fair, but wines, such as the soft berryish El Futuro no esta Escrito Tempranillo (£22) will push the bill up. To top it all, it’s open until 1am every night except Sunday (10pm).
