Far enough away from the manic throng of San Marco to be overlooked by most tourists, Cannaregio is a tranquil neighbourhood where the locals come to eat and drink on the lively strip of canal-side bars and restaurants along Fondamenta Misericordia. Among them is this cheerful, casual seafood restaurant. Guests sit at long tables in a room humming with energy, music and chatter, plus the odd passing cat hoping for a titbit. Served in an efficient, no nonsense manner, the food looks impressive and tastes just as good: sharing plates of cicchetti (Venetian tapas) and antipasti, eye-popping platters of grilled fish, and spaghetti finished in a wheel of parmesan at the table. Portions are generous and prices are reasonable for Venice. There’s live music on some nights. Book ahead as it’s understandably popular.
