Max volume at this bustling bodega, a family affair in the heart of the old town since 1929. Pals joke at the bar, shoppers drop by for a snifter, smug couples hog the few tables that line the walls. As the evening progresses, a younger crowd appears for a night-out starting point. English is limited so shout your order at the barman with plenty of pointing – charades seems to be the accepted lingua franca here. A glass chiller lines the long bar, full of cured meats and tinned specialties (fabulous anchovies) or just take some nuts and olives for a simpler life. El Xampanyet is named after the local Cava that’s served here and, judging by the amount that’s necked, it could well be on tap from the cellar. This is true Barcelona living in a space no bigger than a living room.
