Have you ever wanted to drink a pint in Ethelred’s attic? You won’t get much closer than this bottle shop-cum-bar where the decor is mainly taxidermy deer heads and the beer is fantastic. Even in the atmospheric city of York this place is remarkable, with its animal hide seat covers, beamed ceilings and short but surprisingly delicious menu of homemade meals and snacks. But before you get upstairs you’ll be gobsmacked (and potentially bankrupted) by the range of beers on sale downstairs: literally hundreds of different bottles and cans all arranged with a precision that could only be achieved by a guru of the brew. You can take your purchases upstairs to drink, or take them with you, or drink the ones you bought then buy more on the way out which, let’s be honest, is the likely fate of your visit.
