Sometimes London’s museums feel too big and crowded, and it’s worth remembering that just an hour away, sit two excellent museums pleasing in size, varied in their exhibits and in gloriously civilized surroundings a brief walk from the train station. The first is the Fitzwilliam in Cambridge. The second is Oxford’s Ashmolean Museum of Art & Architecture. Here, temporary exhibitions are eclectic and change regularly. The permanent galleries have an inspiring display of pottery, painting, sculpture and other artistic endeavors. The café on the top floor has a huge roof terrace and is delightfully light and airy inside too.
