Situated on the edge of the Pacific, the Monterey Bay Aquarium is one of the most spectacular displays of ocean life you’ll ever see. There’s the majesty of its 28-foot-high kelp forest, with great leopard sharks, shoals of sardines, and wolf-eels; its shimmering tanks of anchovies (who astonishingly threaten to steal the show); its almost hallucinogenically beautiful jellyfish section; and the Open Sea section where you can gawp at tuna and coo over puffins. It’s a little pricey, but really worth every cent. A perfect stop-off on the legendary Pacific Coast Highway.
