Located in a beautiful 19th-century mansion on a hill above Lausanne town centre, this art gallery stages two or three temporary exhibitions a year, often private collections, retrospectives of major Swiss or international artists (Miró, Signac, Gauguin and Hopper have featured in recent years) or themed shows. The large rooms of the mansion provide a calming backdrop for the artworks, while its location amid parkland, with a view of Lausanne cathedral and Lac Léman (Lake Geneva), is really lovely. Before you head up the hill from town check that the museum is open – it usually closes between shows as it doesn’t display a permanent collection.
