Holkham Beach is a one-mile walk from the car park on Lady Anne's Drive (which costs), along a path surrounded by pinewoods, with raised wooden walkways to save you from the mud after rain. When you descend on to the beach, particularly for the first time, the vast expanse of sand that at low tide stretches miles into the distance, is truly stunning. This is also the moment when dogs and children are liberated to run every which way and wellies are useful to wade through ribbons of water. Pack a picnic and you could spend hours here, collecting shells and luxuriating in the open space. There are many local walks to choose from, plus a beach café.
