At the foot of the Great Pyramid of Khufu sits a long building which looks uncertain in its purpose. It’s actually a museum devoted to a reconstructed solar boat. This full-sized cedarwood barge was believed to be a means of transporting the dead Pharaoh to the afterlife and here, in a specially designed building which is in itself a beauty, the entire thing has been put back together from 1,200 pieces, found in five huge pits in 1954. It’s astonishing. Different levels allow you to see under, on and over the huge boat as you shuffle along with cotton slippers covering your shoes. On the ground level, a display of photographs tell the story of the boat’s discovery and restoration. It’s well worth visiting and you can buy tickets at the entrance to the museum. Taking your own photos costs extra.
