The Towner is easy to spot – it’s housed in a striking, white building designed by Rick Mather Architects. The contents are impressive too: as well as a rotating permanent collection of around 4,500 artworks, there are regular special exhibitions, films and talks, plus research facilities, a rooftop café and a chic little shop. The collection is strong on 20th-century art (including Henry Moore, Paul Nash and Eric Ravilious) and contemporary artists (such as Tacita Dean, Grayson Perry and Olafur Eliasson). The atmosphere is welcoming and inclusive, and the staff are friendly. One of the best small galleries in England.
