Before you begin the steep climb up into the centre of Cortona, Vicolo Iannelli gives you a moment to pause, step back in time and soak up the history. Close to Cortona’s outer city wall, just inside the Porta Santa Maria entrance (cars are parked outside the wall), Vicolo Iannelli’s curved path is lined with tiny medieval houses, with overhanging upper storeys, supported by wooden buttresses and exposed beams. Deserted and quiet but alive with history, this extremely photogenic street is truly arresting and gives a window on Cortona’s pre-tourist life. Once you’re ready to get your leg muscles working, continue uphill a few minutes and you’ll find yourself in the 13th/14th-century Piazza della Repubblica – the heart of this picturesque town.
