Anyone with an interest in the written word will find this museum on the outskirts of Geneva well worth the short bus ride to get there. The Foundation displays the incredible private collection of the late Swiss bibliophile Martin Bodmer, who, over his lifetime, gathered together some of the most important and valuable literary texts in the world. Spanning millennia, his vast collection includes hieroglyphics on parchment from ancient Egypt, Roman-era engravings on bronze, a handwritten Koran on parchment from the 4th century, a 15th-century Gutenberg Bible, a 16th-century atlas, illustrated poems from the Middle Ages and early editions of plays by Shakespeare, Jonson and Molière. As well as the permanent collection there are regular temporary themed exhibitions.
