The Canal du Midi and its locks are designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and this complex of staircase lock gates is the third most visited site in the Languedoc. The nine locks move boats up and down an impressively steep 21.5 metres. Seeing the gates and basins in action is strangely mesmerising as you watch a boat’s passage through them from the manageable side steps. Visitor facilities have been upgraded with plenty of toilets/baby-changing facilities, a café-restaurant and the chance to book a boat trip to experience the locks first-hand. New car parks and resurfacing has made the site pushchair- and wheelchair-friendly but do remember it’s a steep rise to the top.
