Rice RepublicSpectacular Chinese food at unspectacular prices

Rice Republic has been hiding its remarkable Chinese cuisine in plain sight on Streatham High Road since 2013, and, gratifyingly, is growing more popular through word of mouth rather than gram of insta. Always a refreshing change! And – get this – you'll probably have to PHONE UP to reserve a table. The human interaction involved in securing seating here will prepare you for the companionable atmosphere found within Rice Republic; it’s cosy but you’re not on top of each other, and the background music balances out the chatter, resulting in a veritable hubbub.
But it’s the food that is the real draw – fresh and spicy, without the greasiness of your Chinese takeaway student days. The sesame prawn toast made with sourdough is like a comfort blanket, the dim sum is light and succulent, and the Szechuan spicy chicken sits on exactly the right side of eye-watering. The wine list, like the rest of the menu, is reasonably priced, and the herbal teas, served in ornate pots, round off the meal with a wholesome, healthy vibe. This was basically a work-out, but for your taste buds, and not your credit card.
