EstersContender for the best café lunch in London
Hidden on a Stoke Newington back street, Esters is worth seeking out. It looks like lots of other cafés in gentrified areas of London – a white, modern interior with a curated selection of cakes and pastries on a bar and a few tables in a sun-trap backyard – but the quality of the cooking puts it in another league.
A short, inventive lunch menu changes every day but always has a sandwich, a soup and a couple of mains (one of them vegetarian). Whatever you choose, it will be packed with flavour and intrigue: five spice pork belly with fermented raspberry, pickled cucumber, sorrel and a soft boiled egg is typical.
Before noon there are brunch and breakfast dishes, and even the fried eggs come with classy accompaniments. The coffee is great (from Has Bean), but there’s also the option of own-made drinking vinegars and lemonade.
Note that payment is by card only.
