Here's a fun little travelling tip: instead of bringing a book on your journey (or, if you've finished the one you brought with you), why not look up an English-language bookshop (or whichever language you prefer) and ask the bookseller there to recommend something set in their city. Reading a book in its own locale is only half the fun; discovering a new church of the written word has its own pleasure.
In Vienna, you'll be hard-pressed to beat the satisfyingly warren-like Shakespeare & Company (named after the legendary and equally warren-like bookstore on Paris' Left Bank). Located in the centre of the Old Town, it stays open till 9pm most evenings, so you can take a late wander among the book-lined walls and enjoy winding your way deeper into the rabbit hole. (Appropriately, the children's section is at the end, a reward for intrepid young adventurers.)
It's one of those shops where each book has been carefully curated into niche subsections rather than unimaginatively filed 'Fiction A-Z', though once you've satisfied your desire to browse and actually want to buy something, you're best asking the knowledgeable proprietor for a recommendation. He'll steer you right.
