Portland is so much more than a hipster town filled with vintage stores – a label that’s been flung round its neck in recent years. This is an attractive, creative, buzzing city with a lively music scene, first-rate food and drink and a strong artistic community that spreads out east and west from the Willamette River, with stunning views across to Mount Hood’s snow-capped peak. Eco attitudes and sustainability are very much on the menu, with sustainable cocktails, vegetables planted on sidewalks and chickens clucking in back yards, in the more residential neighbourhoods – ‘Keep Portland Weird’ is a recurring sign. Portland is also an American city that welcomes pedestrians and cyclists, rather than being ruled by cars and highways and is generally very laid-back (marijuana is legal). The city’s districts – Pearl, Nob Hill, Alberta, Mississippi – each have their own distinct character, satellite villages to Downtown that’s made up of handsome architectural builds, pedestrian-friendly walkways and expansive riverside life (that hosts many festivals). And if you need a break from city energy, you can head for the hills and lose yourself in Washington Park or Forest Park – one of the country’s largest urban forests – giving you the best of both worlds.
