The Central Business District - or CBD to the locals - covers a portion of the city that sits directly across from the French Quarter. Once you cross the main drag of Canal Street, you're basically there. Home to a large portion of St. Charles Street, the CBD was a hot competitor for New Orleans' cultural center in the 1830s. Often referred to as "downtown New Orleans," the CBD houses a majority of the city's office buildings. However, city preservationists have successfully fought to keep a lot of the classic 19th and 20th century architecture preserved. In this part of the city, neighborhood dive bars sit next to historic court houses and immaculate skyscrapers.
