Documented as the progenitor of industry in Britain, Birmingham has grown to become the UK’s second largest city. A cultural icon, Birmingham is home to a multitude of theatres and music arenas, galleries and restaurants, and has recently undergone a modern rejuvenation – most notably the completely redesigned New Street Station (rebranded as Grand Central), which opened in 2015. The city is built on an extensive canal system (oft-lauded as being larger than Venice’s), and by narrowboat the vibrant bustle of the streets is replaced with the reposed ambiance of Gas Street Basin’s canal-side eateries, the glimpsed history of the Broad Street tunnel, and the twinkling lights of Brindley Place.
