The long stretch of tarmac leading into the city centre from the south eventually emerges as Oxford Road. Along it sits Manchester University, the Whitworth, Manchester Museum, the Royal Northern College of Music and it ends right in the city centre. So crammed with interesting sites is it, with a host of bars, clubs, cafés and performance spaces, that it has become known as ‘the Oxford Road corridor’ taking in adjoining and successive roads, creating a route which provides a city area in one long line rather than a segment. Student turnover means that there’s always something new happening or a new venue to look out for, but it’s the long-standing stalwarts which have sustained it over the years.
