From back of beyond to hipster hub: the gentrification of Hackney is pretty much a done deal these days, at least for big patches of the borough. Area hotspots include Kingsland Road, home to Dalston, popular for its bars, clubs and many Turkish restaurants. Shoreditch to the south forms another nightlife hub. Mare Street is the main thoroughfare of ‘Hackney central’ (near the Overground station of the same name), with its own share of shops, bars and restaurants. Bordering the nearby green space of London Fields is Broadway Market – a once-dilapidated street now home to indie shops and a Saturday artisan food market. To the east, the former industrial spaces in Hackney Wick now house artists’ studios and host warehouse parties.
