Hastings has a raffish, seaside appeal, mixed with an arty vibe. The shingle beach is backed by a long promenade that runs all the way to St Leonards, with amusements and fish and chip shops clustered at the eastern end of town, around the Stade. This is where the fishing fleet is beached, near the distinctive black-painted net huts and the Jerwood Gallery. Set just inland is the quaint Old Town, another popular destination thanks to its independent boutiques, browsable junk shops and destination pubs. For great views, the revamped pier, winner of the 2017 RIBA Stirling Prize for architecture, is a must-visit, as is the Country Park perched on the cliffs above the Old Town.
