Smaller than nearby Geneva but with arguably more character and spirit, Lausanne is a lively student town housing not only a university but the prestigious technology institute EPFL, a world-leading hotel school and a well respected music conservatoire. The result is a youthful, energetic city that’s awash with fresh-faced entrepreneurs launching tech start-ups, bars, microbreweries and food trucks. That’s not always immediately evident – the pretty cobbled streets of the town centre and the posh hotels and overpriced restaurants in lakeside district Ouchy reveal its quainter, stuffier side – however, if you know where to look, Lausanne has some treats to discover.
