It’s a fair hike from any major airport to this village in the Val d’Anniviers, and it’s all the better for it. Though it has its own ski area and some glorious hikes from the top of the Crêt du Midi lift, Vercorin isn’t hugely well known outside Switzerland. The result is a place that, while welcoming to visitors, isn’t overrun with tourists and retains its innate Swissness. The village centre has some beautiful old wooden houses, the surrounding countryside is glorious in all seasons – especially in autumn, when the changing colours are spectacular – and, pleasingly, it’s all accessed by a tiny cable car up from Chalais on the valley floor.
