The small town of Neuchâtel sits on the shore of the lake of the same name on the plateau between the Jura and the Alps. Though it doesn’t have the draw of bigger, better known Swiss cities, it’s well worth stopping by for the lovely medieval Old Town and Château – and the annual wine harvest festival in late September, the biggest in Switzerland. With a view of the Alps in the distance, the placid lake offers boat trips, sailing and paddleboarding, and there are countless hiking and cycling trails in the area, some through the vineyards that carpet the gentle slopes above the lake.
