Geneva often inspires a love it or hate it reaction. If it’s your first port of call in Switzerland you’ll likely be impressed by its lakeside location and the striking Jet d’Eau fountain. However, when compared to other Swiss cities it comes up a little short, lacking in charm, character and – especially on a weekend, when city workers have retreated out of town – atmosphere. Nevertheless, it does have some redeeming features, not least a diverse restaurant scene, some world-class museums and the pretty Italianate suburb of Carouge.
