Porto is Portugal’s second city after Lisbon and is a place of great beauty and character. Sitting on the River Douro just before it flows into the Atlantic, the old town is designated a UNESCO World Heritage site. On one side of the river, the Ribeira, an ancient concoction of cobbled streets and arcaded buildings, on the other, the famous-branded Port houses. Overlooking it all is the stately Dom Luís I double-decker bridge. Be aware that the streets up from the river to other parts of the city are steep and tortuous but there is a funicular next to the bridge that eases the ascent.
