Béziers is one of France’s most ancient cities, dating from around 350 BC. The old town, dominated by St-Nazaire cathedral, sits on a high stone bluff with the River Orb running beneath it. The walk up from the station is demandingly steep but there is a shuttle bus to make the ascent easier. It’s a flourishing, busy centre with plenty of shops, bars and restaurants as well as an impressive number of heritage sites. Béziers is famous for its annual Feria in August when up to one million people pile in over the fest’s five days.
