Belgium’s second-largest city has a lot going for it. It’s known for diamonds and fashion, but you’ll also find all the famous Belgian tummy pleasers here: waffles, moules-frites, Belgian chocolate and a huge variety of local beers. Central Antwerp’s old town is made up of charming, cobblestone streets and amply rewards a few hours of wandering. While it may lack the canals and extreme prettiness of, say, Bruges, it more than makes up for it in shopportunities – Antwerp is chock full of boutiques selling everything from clothes and footwear to homewares, designer quirk and local delicacies. There's also a wealth of historic buildings to explore such as the impressive gothic cathedral and fabulously ornate town hall; plus museums, galleries and ancient guild houses.
