Also known as Cairo's medieval or Islamic quarter, this area could easily be missed by the uninformed visitor but is a must see. It is formed from the old walled city and comprises hundreds of mosques, tombs, fortifications and much more, all dating back for hundreds of years. In 1979 UNESCO proclaimed it a World Cultural Heritage site and its access to Khan el-Khalili, an enormous souq makes it a traveller's dream.
